# What visitors see

> What the chat on your website looks like, what people who use it can do, and which console setting changes each part.

Page: https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/website/what-visitors-see/ · Section: Website · Updated on 30 October 2026

You see the effect of your changes right away in the Chat Preview of Chat agent › Agent profile › Interface, even before you save.

The console's [Test Chat](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/chat-agent/test-and-publish.md) shows the same widget, but without the privacy consent and without the contact form.

![The Officina Rossi test website with the chat open above the button: header with the name, welcome messages, a question about the car service with a bulleted answer, the suggested questions and the message field with paperclip and microphone.](https://supportfast.ai/_astro/06-widget-chat-aperta.BNRuMwv8.webp)

_On a computer, the chat opens in a window above the button, on the side of the website._

## The button

The button is a circle in the primary color, bottom right or bottom left. Inside is the image you uploaded or the icon you chose. While the chat is closed, a number on the button shows the replies not read yet.

You change it in [Interface](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/chat-agent/interface.md).

## The welcome bubble

If you turn it on, the welcome messages appear above the button after a few seconds. A click on a message opens the chat; the X above the messages closes the bubble. Once the visitor has opened the chat, the bubble doesn't come back on that page.

You turn it on with Welcome Bubble on the Button, in [Interface](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/chat-agent/interface.md).

## The chat window

When clicked, the window opens above the button and adapts to the screen. It closes with the X, with the button or with `Esc`; a click outside the window doesn't close it.

The header shows the image or icon and the Chat name. The three-dot menu has these items:

| Item | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| New chat | Sets the conversation aside and opens an empty one, with the welcome. |
| Request an operator | Asks for a person from the team to step in. It's there only if you turned on [live chat (the Operator Chat tab)](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/chat-agent/operator-chat.md), that is the option for a teammate to take over the conversation from the agent, and its button. |
| Chat history | Opens the list of past chats. It's there after the first conversation. |
| End chat | Sets the conversation aside and shows the history. |

## Welcome and suggested questions

The chat opens with the welcome messages, as the agent's first bubbles. Above the message field are the suggested questions, which stay for the whole conversation: a click sends the question right away.

You write the welcome and the questions in [Interface](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/chat-agent/interface.md), Content and Texts panel.

## Writing and getting answers

- While the agent prepares the answer, three dots appear; then the answer shows up as it arrives. It can contain bold, lists, tables, links and images.
- Below the agent's answers there are two thumbs, “Helpful answer” and “Not helpful”: the rating goes into the satisfaction score on the [Dashboard](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/chat-agent/dashboard.md).

## The contact form

If you turn on the contact form, the chat asks the visitor for their details: before the chat, if the form is required, or after the agent's first answer, in a box the visitor can also close.

If the details are already known, from an earlier visit or [passed by your website](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/developers/user-data.md), the form isn't shown. The settings are in [Agent profile: Contacts](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/chat-agent/contacts.md).

## The privacy consent

If you enter the link to your Privacy Policy in Agent profile › General, the “Privacy Policy” screen appears before the chat. It contains the link and the “I agree” button: until the visitor agrees, they can't write.

## Attachments

With Enable file sending, the paperclip appears; the visitor can also drag or paste a file. Files are sent one at a time, with an optional text. The allowed formats and sizes are in [Agent profile: Interface](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/chat-agent/interface.md).

The agent sees that a file has arrived and answers the text written with it. The file stays in the conversation, where the team can open it.

## Voice messages

With Enable voice messages, the microphone appears. The visitor records from 1 to 30 seconds; the voice message is transcribed and the agent answers the transcript.

Voice messages work on a website with an `https://` address and with your OpenAI key connected: see [OpenAI key](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/developers/openai-key.md). The browser asks the visitor for microphone permission.

## Talking to an operator

When the visitor chooses Request an operator during operator hours, the chat tells them that an operator will be with them shortly and that the agent answers in the meantime. Outside those hours it shows your Unavailability Message; if you haven't written one, it says when the operator will be available again. In both cases the agent keeps answering until a teammate joins. When a teammate joins, the visitor sees their name above the messages.

How the request reaches the team is in [Stepping in as an operator](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/conversations/take-over.md); the settings are in [Agent profile: Operator Chat](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/chat-agent/operator-chat.md).

## History and data saved in the browser

When the visitor comes back, the chat reopens the ongoing conversation, if it hasn't been idle for too long; otherwise it opens a new one. From “Chat history” they can see past chats again and pick one up.

The history stays in the browser and isn't tied to the person: on another device, in another browser, in private browsing or if the browser doesn't allow saving data, the chat starts from scratch. It contains only the website's chats, not those from WhatsApp or social media.

The widget doesn't use cookies, but it saves technical data in the visitor's browser storage (`localStorage`). It's only the data needed to resume the chat:

- a random code that links the browser to its chats;
- the ongoing conversation and the link to the contact;
- the date of the privacy consent, which is valid for one month;
- after End chat, the flag to reopen the chat on the history.

Under privacy rules this data counts like cookies: mention it in your website's cookie policy. See [Privacy and security](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/help/privacy-security.md); the technical details are in [Widget JavaScript API](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/developers/widget-api.md#what-it-saves-in-the-browser).

## The language

The chat speaks the language of the visitor's browser, if it's one of the workspace languages, and your texts follow the same language: fill them in for every language. The full rules are in [Supported languages](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/help/languages.md).

## Theme, colors and footer text

The Theme is Light or Dark. Colors left on Automatic are worked out by the widget, so that texts stay readable.

A text of yours can appear at the bottom of the chat, for example a privacy notice, with bold, italics and links. You write it in the Privacy Disclaimer in the Footer field.

## On phones and tablets

On a phone, the open chat fills the whole screen and the button hides.

![Two phone screenshots of the Officina Rossi test website: on the left the welcome bubble above the closed button, on the right the chat open full screen with the welcome messages and the suggested questions.](https://supportfast.ai/_astro/06-widget-telefono.Cm6EJeh7.webp)

_On a phone, the visitor first sees the welcome bubble, then the full-screen chat._

## Accessibility

The chat can be used with the keyboard alone (`Tab`, `Enter`, `Esc`) and with screen readers.

## What depends on the plan

> **Plan**
>
> **Features your plan doesn't include don't appear.** Without “Live chat”, Request an operator is missing; without “Contacts”, the contact form doesn't appear; without “Files and audio in chat”, the paperclip and the microphone are missing. Your settings stay saved and come back into effect when the plan includes the feature, without touching the website's code. The “Powered by SupportFast.ai” signature at the bottom of the chat appears on the plans that include it and goes away with the add-on that removes it. See [Plans, quotas and usage](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/account/plans-and-usage.md).

## Frequently asked questions

**What happens when the month's messages run out?**

The chat shows “You've reached the monthly message limit.”: the causes are in [Website widget](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/help/widget-issues.md#the-visitor-reads-youve-reached-the-monthly-message-limit-or-you-can-no-longer-write-in-this-conversation). If instead a visitor sends too many messages in a row, they read the Limit exceeded message written in Agent profile › General.

**Why does a visitor read “You can no longer write in this conversation.”?**

The contact has been blocked by the team. How to unblock it is explained in [Blocking contacts](https://supportfast.ai/en/guide/contacts/blocking.md).
