Before you start
- The widget code of an Active chat agent, copied from Chat agentAgent profileShare, Chat button panel.
- A WordPress administrator user who can install plugins.
#With a plugin (recommended)
Use the free Simple Custom CSS and JS plugin by SilkyPress, available on WordPress.org.
-
Open the list of plugins to add
In the WordPress dashboard, go to PluginsAdd New Plugin. In older WordPress versions the item is called Add New.
-
Install the plugin
Search for “Simple Custom CSS”. On the Simple Custom CSS and JS plugin, press Install Now and then Activate.
-
Create an HTML code
In the WordPress sidebar, open the plugin's menu item and choose Add Custom HTML.
-
Name it and paste the code
Type a name you'll recognize, for example “SupportFast chat”. In the text area below the name, paste the widget code.
-
Choose Header
In the options in the right-hand sidebar, choose Header: the code goes into the header of every page.
-
Publish
Press Publish.
Another custom code plugin works too, as long as it puts the code in the header of every page without changing it.
Result
The widget code is in the header of every page of the website.
#Clear the cache
Many WordPress websites use a cache: a plugin such as WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache or W3 Total Cache, the hosting cache or a CDN. After you publish the code, clear every cache you use: until they refresh, visitors get the pages saved earlier, without the widget.
#How to check
Open the website in a private window, so you aren't signed in as an administrator, and follow the check in Installing the widget. If the widget doesn't appear, or appears only when the visitor scrolls the page, the cause is usually an optimization plugin that delays scripts, or the cookie consent manager blocking scripts until the visitor accepts: what to do is in Website widget.
#Frequently asked questions
My website is on WordPress.com: can I install the widget?
On WordPress.com, plugins and custom code are available only with some plans. Check your plan on WordPress.com. If it doesn't include them, you can use the chat link.
Can the chat recognize customers who are registered on the website?
Yes, with a few lines of PHP code, in the child theme or in a snippets plugin. The example, to hand to whoever looks after the website, is in Passing user data.
